When you’re smilin’….keep on smilin’
The whole world smiles with you
And when you’re laughin’….keep on laughin’
The sun comes shinin’ through

- Louis Armstrong.

It’s no secret that everybody wants to be liked.  The need to bond with another and make connections is strong, it’s human nature.  But how do you go about it?  I suggest starting with the basics:  Smile often, smile a lot.

A smile costs nothing and brings many happy returns.  It brightens up your day and all  those who see it.  It tells the world you are warm, approachable, and caring.  It’s a non-verbal “Hello” that is almost immediately reciprocated.  And it makes you more attractive to boot.  I bet you know someone you’re attracted to even though they don’t fit the mold of what you consider to be your “type”, right?  Yet you and other people find them irresistible, confident and charming.  Chances are they smile a lot.

Who is the most likable? Hint: It’s not the one with the snazziest tie.

And I’m not talking about a half-assed grin, or those condescending smirks either.  I’m talking about genuine, heartfelt smiles.  The ear to ear reaching, tooth flashing, I feel like a million bucks kind of smile.  So how do you do it?

Let’s do a little exercise.  Stand in front of a mirror and close your eyes.  Now recall a time in your life when you felt truly happy.  It could be anything.  When asked for an example,  my sister says it was her wedding day.  My brother says it’s when his daughter was born.  For me it was when I first got my house.  Focus on the feelings and experience them again by remembering the sensations.  Have it start in your gut - a warm fuzzy feeling.  Like a ball of energy swirling around your stomach, and feeling better and better as it moves upward to your temple.  Exploding in a wave of pure joy as it reaches it’s peak.  Now open your eyes.

See that smile?  THAT is the smile I’m talking about.  Remember what it looks like and practice smiling like that.  A few minutes everyday in front of the mirror ought to do it.  Your facial muscles can be trained like any other muscle in your body.  To ensure success, you might want to do a little anchoring to your daily smile practice.  Soon it becomes second nature and can be unleashed anytime.

Seems like something to smile about no?
