Keep your pecker up!

No, this isn’t a sales pitch for natural male enhancement, you get enough of that throughout the day in your spam folder dear reader.  This is about keeping your head up high through the tough times.

I first heard the phrase uttered a few weeks ago.  It was hilarious not only because of the images it invoked(hee hee), but because it was said to a girl:)  She was having a bad day you see and it was meant to cheer her up.

Doing a little bit of research I found out that the phrase was European in origin, where the word pecker referred to nose or the mouth - the image of a bird pecking at it’s food comes to mind.  As opposed to the American slang version where pecker refers to the male reproductive organ (hee hee.)

Ahem, ok growing up now…the phrase means to keep your chin up and stay positive.

We all face trials and tribulations on a daily basis.  The magnitude varies that’s for sure but it does pile up to the point that it get’s overwhelming.  The most common ones include but are not limited to:

  • Work: Falling behind with tasks and feeling you may not make your work deadline.
  • Finances: Not making enough money to pay the bills.
  • Health: An increasing waist line.
  • Personal life: Specifically the lack there of.  Or arguments between you and your significant other or friends.

While it’s important to acknowledge these things, it’s even more important not to wallow in them.  It’s a trap that can lead to a rut, something you never want to be in.  Which in turn can lead down the slippery slope of depression.

Here are a few reasons why it’s important to keep your head up through the tough times:

  • A change in attitude:  In an earlier post about anchoring I talked about how feelings and states can be associated with unique stimuli to envoke and recall them.  Notice how when you’re feeling down your natural physical response it to hang your head low?  What happens when you lift your head up?  You don’t feel as bad, don’t you?  Aha!
  • Tomorrow is a new day:  There are only 24 hours in a day, so comfort yourself in the fact that the craptastic day you’re experiencing will end and that tomorrow WILL be better.  Something to look forward to, no?
  • You are in control:  While you can’t control the weather, the ebb and flow of the tides, or the rising and setting of the sun (At least not yet anyway ^_^); you definitely have control of your disposition.
  • A different perspective:  “He who focuses on the doo-doo on the ground misses the opportunity to admire the beautiful bird that made the doo-doo”  - read from a fortune cookie a while back.  I’m paraphrasing of course but you get the idea :)
  • Your pride:  You won’t take any guff from a punk now would you?  That’s right, even if the punk was you.  You deserve better than being down in the dumps.
  • Capitalize on opportunities:  Feeling sorry for yourself and looking down on the ground is a surefire way to miss out on opportunities.  It’s also a surefire way to run into things, ouch!
